The Haskalah, also known as Jewish Enlightenment, is a movement that takes place in the 18th and 19th centuries. One of its motivations is to promote secular education and equality for the Jewish community in European society. The overall aim of the Haskalah is to modernise Jewish life, expand knowledge and encourage people to examine culture and science in general. The Haskalah promotes education in the national language, the exploration of secular topics and the reform of Jewish life to enable Jews to better meet the challenges of the time. Girls are also provided with more and more access to equivalent education.
