The word “zachor”, meaning “remember!” can be found in the Hebrew Bible a total of 169 times. It refers to remembering God and the People of Israel: their history and their experiences. Remembrance is a key concept in Judaism and is firmly anchored in rituals, prayers, holidays and commemoration days. Remembrance is a prerequisite for commemoration because in order to commemorate, one needs to remember. That said, commemoration goes far beyond simply remembering: It honours individuals, creates a sense of community and lends public expression to remembrance – right up to the present day. In Judaism, the scope of commemoration extends from the Exodus from Egypt to the Shoah and right up to commemorating the massacre of 7 October 2023.
