Nahala means “heritage” or “legacy” and refers to a day of commemoration on the anniversary of a loved one’s death. On this day, a memorial candle is lit and left to burn for 24 hours. Many synagogues contain a commemorative board for deceased members of their congregations, on which a memorial light bulb lights up every year on the anniversary of a person’s death.
