Isaac Luttichuys - Portrait of a Lady

Coming from London, Isaac Luttichuys found a wealthy clientele among the urban patriciate of Amsterdam, which quickly enabled him to pursue a successful career as a portrait painter. Our painting is one half of a typical double portrait of a married couple, in which the woman on the right is facing her husband on the left.

She is wearing a white silk dress with large puffed sleeves and a wide neckline trimmed with a narrow golden border. In her left hand, she holds a rose for her husband with a delicate grip - a symbol of love even back then. On her wrist, she is wearing a four-row pearl bracelet. The white gown enhances the luminosity of her fair complexion, the complexion of a noblewoman, which is further accentuated by the precious jewelry of her necklace, the long drop earrings and the diadem-like beaded headband.
