In addition to the "regular" items acquired between 1933 and 1945, the State Museum Mainz owns a collection of around 60 paintings, 150 prints and 9 pieces of furniture that were confiscated from the property of deported and emigrated Jews between 1941 and 1944. In an initial research project, also funded by the German Lost Art Foundation (Deutsches Zentrum Kulturgutverluste), between 2016 and 2019, it was determined that the holdings came to the museum as part of several transfers by the Hesse Regional Tax Office in Darmstadt and the recycling office of the Mainz City Tax Office. Subsequently, some items were restituted to the heirs of the former owners. All other items have been added to the Lost Art database.
