Two relief panels depicting a Capricorn

The two relief panels with the mirror-imaged depiction of a Capricorn and a cornucopia probably decorated the spandrels of an arch that may have stood in the legionary camp as part of the headquarters located in the “Kästrich” street. The capricorn, which is half-goat (front) and half-fish (back), was not only the heraldic animal of many legions stationed in Mainz but also the sign of the zodiac of Augustus.
