Jupiter giant column

A multitude of columns dedicated to Jupiter and found in Germania Superior were topped with a sculpture of a giant riding a horse, a so-called Gigantenreiter, which led them to be known as the Jupiter giant columns. In this example, Jupiter, who has only been preserved in fragments, is riding over two giants rather than the usual single giant. One of the two giants is lying on its back, and the other is turning around to face the front. The earth-born giants with a human upper body and two snake-like legs are trying unsuccessfully to defeat the Olympian gods.
