Traces of Jewish life in the present-day Rhineland-Palatinate date back to late antiquity. There is continuous evidence of Jews in the region from the 10th century onwards. The establishment of the ShUM association[SC1] of the three cities Mainz, Worms and Speyer marks the beginning of the timeline. The joint legal statues adopted between the three cities regulate the life of Jews in their new home region. These statutes are binding – not only for the three communities but also for the entire area of Europe north of the Alps – until the 14th century. Starting in the three ShUM cities, the timeline follows the life of Jews in Rhineland-Palatinate right up to the present day.
