Born in the village of Ungstein, Elise Dosenheimer is a Germanist, publicist and women’s rights activist. She initially studies German Philology, Philosophy and History as a guest student at the universities of Berlin, Jena and Heidelberg from 1904. She then works as a publicist in Jena, Munich and Heidelberg and gives lectures on literature in Jena until 1933. As a women’s rights activist, she campaigns for women’s access to university education and professional development, as well as for women’s suffrage. In 1940, she is deported to the internment camp in Gurs, but she is then granted a visa for the USA. She dies in New York City in 1959.
