Patent for the cloth merchant Simon Lippmann, 1816

To enable him to conduct his business without hindrance, Simon Lippmann obtained a document similar to a certificate of conduct from his home town, which is now confirmed by a state authority. Although he is explicitly referred to as a citizen, he is also labelled a Jew. In fact, the form contains several anti-Jewish prejudices. It dates back to the short period in 1815/1816 during which part of the Palatinate was Austrian.
