Levite pitcher (water pitcher)
The pitcher was used for the hand-washing ritual during Jewish services. Up until the abolition of guilds – in Mainz in 1798 – Jews are not permitted to run craft establishments. Jewish customers therefore have to commission Christian silversmiths to produce such items.
guilds
Guild A union of craftspeople who preserved the common interests of their profession by laying down rules for training, quality, pricing and the number of businesses. Jews were not allowed to become guild members.
