Meir ben Joel ha-Kohen and his wife Judith

Meir ben Joel ha-Kohen and his wife Judith found the women’s shul in Worms in 1212/1213. He is a leader of the Jewish community, and she is the daughter of the benefactor of the mikveh in Worms. Both Meir and Judith are given a detailed donor’s inscription, both of which are mounted in the Worms Synagogue as a reference to the beneficence of the married couple. Their foundation is a prime example of active zedakah, namely social responsibility. The two inscriptions have been preserved as a reminder of the couple’s beneficence to the present day and serve as evidence of the close connection between religious life and community spirit during their time.
