When the Mainzer Frauenarbeitsschule, a vocational school for women, is founded in 1896, Elisa Bernays is one of the first women to be actively involved in the association of the same name. The school enables many women based in Mainz to achieve better professional qualifications. One of Bernays’ main achievements is her involvement in the establishment of a legal protection organisation for women in 1900. This offers women free legal advice for problems related to marriage and family law and also provides assistance in cases involving labour law issues, as well as handling written correspondence with authorities. She also works in several other societies for many years, for example on the Board of Management of the Alice Women's Association for Nursing.
