Tass (Torah shield)

This shield is an example of typical Ashkenazic Torah decorations and is used to adorn the Torah when it is not in use. The border displaying various symbols is reminiscent of King Solomon’s Temple, the ancient temple in Jerusalem. There are a number of inscriptions, for example “Crown of Kingship – Crown of Priesthood”, as well as a pair of wings to symbolise the cherubim, the heavenly servants and companions of God.
