Fragment of a mappa (Torah wimpel)

In around 1400, the Rabbi MaHaRIL, one of the most significant scholars in Mainz, first mentioned the custom of later using the swaddling clothes of a circumcised newborn to bind a Sefer Torah (Torah scroll). This fragment from Weisenau displays features such as the year and the congratulatory phrase “Mazel tov!”.
