The Torah reading is at the heart of Jewish services on the Shabbat and on Jewish holidays. The Torah is carried from the Torah Ark to the bema in a ceremonial act. Members of the community then read the weekly Torah portion or recite blessings. Prayers and songs also form part of the service, which can only be fully celebrated in the presence of a minyan, a group of ten Jewish adults. Each synagogue has an eternal flame that burns in front of the Torah Ark to symbolise God’s eternal presence – reminiscent of the candelabrum that burned in the ancient Temple in Jerusalem.
