Nicolaus Blättermann is one of the last living Holocaust survivors in Rhineland-Palatinate and a key figure of the Jewish culture of remembrance in the region. Deported at the age of 19, he survives the Shoah and forced labour in Upper Silesia. In 1953, he joins the U.S. Army in Bad Kreuznach as a senior civil engineer. When the army withdraws from the region, he arranges the conversion of the chapel into a synagogue and plays a key role in the integration of Jewish emigrants from Eastern Europe. He goes on to be awarded a medal of honour by the town of Bad Kreuznach and appointed as Honorary Chairman of the Jewish Congregation of Bad Kreuznach.
