The Memorial Book of Mainz
Memorial books were kept in Jewish communities to record the names and histories of the deceased. These books contain:
- the names of members of the community who have passed away
- prayers and memorial texts to be read aloud on special days such as Yom Kippur
- memories of people who died as a result of persecution or violence
A memorial book symbolises that the deceased will never be forgotten. In line with the Jewish commitment to remembrance, it keeps the names and histories of deceased individuals alive and passes them down to future generations. The Memorial Book of Mainz was kept by the orthodox religious community.

Opposite: liberal - A Jewish confession (a religious persuasion) that originated in Germany in the 19th century and represents a modernisation of traditional religious practice and principles.
