This stone with an inscription that reads “In memory of R. Gershom ben R” is located in the Memorial Cemetery in Mainz. Based on the script type, it can be dated back to the 12th century at the earliest. However, the important legal scholar and rabbi Gershom ben Yehuda died much earlier, namely in 1028. This memorial stone therefore replaces the headstone that was no longer in place in the 12th/13th century.

Visitors still continue to place stones on the grave in his honour in the present day.
