Headstone of Ḥanna, daughter of Yehuda Löw

A Roman inscription stone was reused to create this headstone. The Hebrew inscription was then added in a recessed text area. By emphasising the young age at which the woman died, the headstone strongly underlines her wisdom and charitable nature. It is therefore an important testimony to the social and cultural history of women in the ShUM communitie.

This stone stands at the head of the grave of Mrs Hannah,

who died at the age of 19.

She was crowned with wisdom like someone of a ripe old age,

the daughter of our master, Mr Yehuda, a “lion in the community”.

Even at her young age, she was praised for almost everything she did.

She gave her soul for her neighbour,

shared her bread generously

and prepared rations for the long journey to hope.

She died on the day of destruction of the Holy Temple in year 52 of the count

and with the peace of her return home,

she has reached atonement over us

(= and with her death, she has atoned for us).

May she dwell with the women in the tabernacle.
