Jewish cemeteries bear witness to the lives of past generations and the belief in the immortality of the soul. Their graves stay in place for eternity and are not allowed to be levelled. The oldest cemeteries in Rhineland-Palatinate, for example, those in Worms and Mainz, have long-standing traditions as central burial places for entire regions. Headstones, inscriptions and customs make them unique sources of Jewish history– and places of lasting remembrance.
