How can one’s existential fears be expressed? Under the difficult conditions of his involuntary exile in Amsterdam (1937-1947), Max Beckmann painted his works in his own coded symbolic language. He processes this dark time in a great creative frenzy! Many of his large triptychs were created while he was exiled in Amsterdam. He painted this artwork shortly before the end of the Second World War: It impressively shows the artist's hopelessness and pessimistic view of the world.
