Immediately after his time as a soldier in the Second World War, Ernst Wilhelm Nay came to Hofheim im Taunus, not far from Mainz. He was taking up an invitation from the collector, networker, and later gallery owner Hanna Bekker vom Rath, who provided him with a studio.
In this environment, Nay also got to know the young artist Otto Greis and the two developed long-standing friendship. Nay's dissolution of the subject into individual shapes and surfaces, some of which are separated by wide contours and lines, had a lasting influence on Otto Greis on his path to finding a distinct, abstract visual language. A few years later (1952), Greis became one of the founders of German Art Informel.
