Wood to bend, but without breaking

Master carpenter Michael Thonet from Boppard in the central Rhine region perfected the art of bending wood during the Biedermeier period. Appointed to Vienna, he set up an international large-scale furniture production facility there from 1842.

At the 1851 World's Fair in London, innovative technology and industrialization were viewed positively, as was generally the case in the 19th century.

His furniture quickly became the epitome of light, practical furniture. The chair with the designation "No. 14" became the epitome of coffee house furniture. Even the Bauhaus artists accepted it as the modern chair par excellence.

Since 1890, Thonet furniture has been manufactured by the company "Gebrüder Thonet" in Frankenberg (Eder), in Hesse.
