Philipp Zeltner was born in Mainz and painted numerous views of his home town. His views of the Rhine in particular, as well as other motifs from the immediate surroundings, are well-known and were also available as postcards.
He studied at renowned academies of his time in Munich, Karlsruhe and at the Académie Julian in Paris. He then returned to Mainz.
Here he was an art teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts and also worked as a painter. He also had a private painting school in the Iron Tower in Mainz. After his marriage in 1907, he lived close to the Rhine in the Uferstraße.
Zeltner's paintings show landscapes or genre scenes, occasionally also portraits, as in this painting of the actor Emil Wirth. In addition to canvas paintings, he also created murals in the foyers of many restaurants and hotels in the area.
