Art Nouveau broke away from many traditions and habits. However, one culture fascinated people at the end of the 19th century: in 1873, Japan took part in a world exhibition in Vienna for the first time and since then many artists have drawn inspiration from Japanese woodcuts, for example.
Typical of so-called Japonism is the tall, narrow format and the strong stylization of natural forms. Although there is an implied perspective, the effect of the surfaces is more important than the illusion of spatiality.
Within a very short time, by 1898, the tapestry had been illustrated in all important magazines and was celebrated as a masterful and exemplary example of modern textile art due to its lines.
Like all designers of his time, Eckmann was extremely versatile: his typeface "Eckmann" became the best-known typeface of Art Nouveau.
