Mega construction site

The story of the Tower of Babel is found in the Bible and is symbolic of man's presumption. For he had dared to put himself on the same level as God with this building, which was supposed to reach up to heaven. As punishment, God gave people different languages, making communication impossible. - the abstruse construction project remained unfinished.

The painter Lucas van Valckenborch achieves the gigantic effect of the tower through the tiny scale of the workers, who are painted as small as ants.
The artist enhances the painting’s depth by structuring it into three distinct spatial layers: a dark foreground, a lighter middle ground with the building site and a green-blue background.
Valckenborch paints an incredible amount of detail that invites discovery. Did you already spot the elephants and camels?
